We now have the go ahead to trial the bandstand in its current location in Choumert Grove Car Park until the end of September!  The Bandstand has been sitting idle since the event on 7th June while we worked out with Southwark Council if it requires performance licenses and planning permission.  It is now available for musicians, dancers, stand up comedians, singers, and all round performers to take to the stage!

We are excited to see the bandstand come to life once more with performers of all kinds.  The idea for this came from community members living close to this space way back at the co-design workshops last summer.  Now it is a reality, allowing us to trial if it is possible to make this a permanent feature in Choumert Grove. Many thanks go to Patrick King who designed and built the bandstand, Dan Cooper for creating the graphics on it, and Lauren Curl for getting it this far!

As a trial we will be monitoring how local residents and businesses find it, how it is used by performers, be that individual musicians; dance troops; schools or community groups, and if the general public enjoy the performances that take place.  There will be a statuary consultation taking place this summer so local residents will get an opportunity to feedback their experience.

The Bandstand does not have a license for events during the trial period which means thatan organised event cannot take place in this location. An event is organised if it has been planned in advance and advertised to be taking place on a particular day/night in the future. The purpose of the bandstand is to offer a public stage for performers to express their work which will animate what is often an empty and underused space.

For the first few weeks the lovely people at Cafe Viva on Choumert Road will hold the key to the bandstand where they will take a deposit and a bank card as security for the key. At the start of August the key will move locations and this will be indicated on the bandstand itself. Performers can ask for the key at any time and must return the key the same day during Cafe Viva’s opening hours:

Tus-Fri 7:30 – 5:00

Sat-Sun: 9:00-5:00

We hope you enjoy this summer of performance in Choumert Grove.  Please feel free to leave your feedback to it on this blog post.  We can’t wait to see it in action!
